My Review

This book far surpassed my expectations. The story spans several generations and is lovely. Matelda, the matriarch, is nearing old age and death. She reflects on her own life by telling her granddaughter about her mother's own romantic experiences.

A family's love for one another as well as their deepest secrets and trauma are all explored in this story, which takes place between the 1920s and the present. It also contains the most beautiful love story. A marginally more significant World War II historical event was discovered among Tuscany, Marseilles, and Scotland.

There is a clear contrast between the male and female characters. Each of the women is strong, diligent, and perpetually unselfish. They are happy and fatigued at the same time. They can be difficult and snarky at times, but they are always loving. On the other side, the guys aren't as much. Some people are bad and reckless. Even the most conscientious, truthful, and charitable of the others lack the women's character strength.

I didn't quite understand some of the lengthy family secrets, and there were a couple too many side stories, which slowed the plot down a little. The continual explication on the value of family struck me as a touch tedious as well.

I don't know if it's just me, but I feel like the modern characters are always portrayed in the worst possible ways, like the fuel for the aftermath of the story, particularly in this book-length instance. Too much for each book, and in comparison, the personal actions of modern characters lose their depth and turn frivolous and dull.

But it's still a quick read and one that's nice to have. lovely blending of bitter and sweet.

The Summary

Will she have the stamina to withstand the Phoenix's seductive voice pleading with her to set the globe and everything in it on fire as her influence and power expand?

My Review

This book was fantastic! There was no way this brilliant series could have ended more perfectly. It was stern and disruptive to your emotional equilibrium, but it was also profoundly significant and expertly written. It manages to catch you off surprise all the way through.

Without a doubt, these characters have come a long way, and I have loved watching them grow but also fall apart. Kuang has excelled in developing characters that you can't help but root for, even though they make terrible choices and ultimately turn out to be violent, narcissistic, crafty, and powerful people. Partway through the novel, particularly in The Burning God, you find yourself rooting for Rin to win at any costs, but as you learn what the sacrifice is, you start to wonder whether you could also be a mean person.

An intriguing set of characters were also introduced to the roster of characters. Since then, I've discovered that I should never put my confidence in others. In this series, each character has a personal agenda.

The setting and plot of this one still place a strong emphasis on politics and winning the war. This book spends a lot of time on trauma, including all of the ways it can manifest and loop. We frequently see the misery brought on by prejudice, the outcomes of discrimination, and the effects of imperialism, in addition to the agony produced by physical, sexual, and other forms of abuse. However, we get to observe how a variety of individuals in the book approach coping with their own traumas. Although it is extremely unpleasant, it is also crucial, real, and honest.

The Burning God, in my perspective, stresses how loyalty, commitment, and possibly even justice can help conceal abuse and trauma more easily. I found the main emphasis on guerrilla and defensive warfare tactics to be incredibly intriguing.

Anyone who has read this book can appreciate how expertly the author depicts the genuine horrors of war, smoothly combines historical information, doesn't sugarcoat the difficult material, and avoids romanticizing it like many authors do.

Unless I publish a spoiler review, I won't go into further detail. The reader was left to develop their own judgments on a few new information tale points that were not fully explored.

The protagonists of The Burning God engaged in an internal fight over their own feelings and emotional welfare in the third act, which made for a tremendously compelling reading experience.

I implore all of my fellow fantasy readers to read and try out this series! The ending was so devastating that I'm not sure when I'll be able to let it go. There are no unanswered questions, unfinished business, or unbroken hearts in this conclusion.

The Summary

Rachel Kramer, who has grown more skeptical of her father's genetic studies, decides that this trip to Germany with him in the summer of 1939 will be her last. But all changes when Rachel receives a mysterious letter from her estranged pal asking for assistance. Kristine Schlick, a married SS officer, thinks that her husband considers their deaf daughter Amelie as a stain on his Aryan heritage as she perceives the dark tides turning.

The swastikas that hang like ebony spiders from every government building in Berlin are as threatening as Schlick, who Rachel once courted. She worries that the information in her father's papers may reveal what Hitler had in mind for people it deemed "unworthy of life," such as Amelie. She takes a chance by looking through his classified papers, but all she finds are startling revelations about her own past and a family she has never met.

Now that the SS are after her, Rachel turns to Jason Young, an unorthodox ally who is a motivated, disarming American journalist and who introduces her to Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a contentious theologian, and the resistance. Rachel is forced into hiding, and as she and Jason walk a fine line, risking their lives and requesting that others do the same for folks they barely know but grow to love, their every ideal is tested.

My Review

I must say, this is really a moving tale. I learn something new every time I read a book with a World War II backdrop. I like learning about a conflict from all perspectives, and this book did not disappoint.

This harrowing and painful book gave me a thorough grasp of eugenics and its relevance in Hitler's Nazi Germany. The author was able to successfully bring to life a particularly horrific era in history through vivid descriptions, apparent historical study, and the inclusion of actual people who participated in World War II.

The story may have gotten off to a slow start. I was a little lost for a time because I didn't know what to expect before starting the book. I was shocked at how beautifully it all fit together, though, when it began to make sense. That was probably a good thing because it enabled me to finish what I had started reading. Everything takes place at the perfect time.

I also adored how the characters genuinely did have weaknesses. When the Hitler regime was established, many of them were forced to face the convictions they had formed as kids. Many people had to go past their obstacles, beliefs, and worries.

Keeping track of all the characters in this novel might be difficult. However, the plot is incredibly well-written and everything works together seamlessly. In the book's end, she discloses which characters were created but were influenced by actual persons who lived at that period and which ones were entirely fictional.

This book also covers a wide range of war-related subjects, making it a fantastic resource for learning more about the atrocities that took place at that time. Sadly, this book has ugly things as well to conflict, mystery, romance, and a lot of faith.

Reading this book is not a waste of time, and it is a great historical reminder. Sincere to the core, I'm ecstatic to have discovered this book.

My Review

I'll start by admitting that I occasionally fell asleep while reading this book.

There are some genuinely fascinating portions to this story of two sisters and their Russian immigrant mother. Even though I was aware of the historical aspect, there were times when I had to put it on hold since I couldn't stand to read too many tales set in 1940s Leningrad at once.

As I read on, I found myself unable to put the book down and compelled to finish it. At first, I wasn't sure of it. I only read the book grudgingly because I wanted to learn what had made the mother have to live as an ice princess for so long.

This novel does occasionally feel like two different stories because of the divergent time periods in the two narratives, one taking place in the early 2000s and the other in the 1920s–1940s. The transitions from past to present became easier as the book progressed, but occasionally they did cause me to lose focus on the story I was now reading.

Even though I had concerns with it, I did like how this book told a story that clearly established the characters and their objectives. I didn't understand how well the explanation had built the reality of these people until the second part of the book, even though it did mean that the plot suffered a little.

Overall, I didn't find the book to be very useful. The characters all felt lifeless since none of them had any psychological depth or nuance. I had really high hopes for this book, thus I was very disappointed.

A well-written story that exposed a terrible time in history that I was unaware even existed, I ultimately found this book to be somewhat entertaining.

My Review

The ideal trip, A postcard from Italy displays the country's splendors.

This book depicts the Second World War's hardships, contemporary London, love, loss, and incredible journeys.

The variety of characters and their difficulties, the stunning settings, and the intriguing plot lines all flowed together so well thanks to the outstanding pacing. It never felt like I was reading two separate stories that alternated between the present and the past.

Grace was a special person who had been expertly constructed. She was a person trying to escape the mold that some others had given her due to their own failure to step up to the plate when called upon. Through her discoveries, she might be able to venture outside of her comfort zone and take that first tentative step. She only required a little assistance, inspiration, and fortitude.

I found it fascinating how the story evolved, and I believed the journal entries were a great way to give Connie a voice and connect the past to the present.

As it was mentioned in the title, Italy occurs in the book, though more so in the second half. Italy wasn't a huge plot aspect, which pleased me, but more that it appeared in the novel just when the past's puzzle pieces began to come together.

What a wonderful, comprehensive, and beautiful book this is. It's the perfect thing to cozy up with in the dead of winter when traveling to Italy's pleasant, warm climate. It offers a unique plot, likeable characters, and a ton of depth and insight. I can promise you that the story will rapidly draw you in.
