The Summary

You don't learn that you are the embodiment of magic every day.

The fifteen-year-old Crystal's faith is challenged when she discovers that her birth mother sought out witches to conceive her. Her prayers are not being heard by God.

She is.

Crystal tries to control her ability after her aunt is put in danger, but flying and summoning fireballs draw hazardous attention. Shamans and witches chase Crystal in an effort to use her to put an end to their long-running battle when a witch hunter kidnaps her boyfriend.

Crystal won't only fall short of defending those she loves and putting a stop to the war if she can't see what she's capable of. She might unleash the end of days.

My Review

A nice little surprise, this book was. When I initially got it, I thought I'd read one of the many witch stories I have, but there were actually a lot more. I found myself absolutely captivated in Crystal's quest to understand herself and her abilities, and I was unable to put the book down.

I was struck by the language and the idea of seamlessly blending wizards, magic, and religion. The reader is kept interested by how smoothly the plot advances. However, whenever religion is a work's primary theme, there is a possibility that the reader will think the author is trying to get a particular point across. At no point in the entire novel did I feel as close to the situation.

The characters are also developing really well, without taking away from the plot. The plot introduces a lot of fascinating characters, which makes you want to learn more about them and run into more of them in the future. This book had just the right amount of action, anguish, and teenage love.

That was such a wonderful coming-of-age story. This is the tale of a young woman's journey as she looks for God and her true vocation in life. Obviously with a secret peril and a magic.

Young adult readers will find a lot to enjoy in this novel, but readers of all ages will find something to enjoy as well. Everybody will find something they like in it to some extent!
