The Summary

Cadence Piper has always had trouble fitting in because of her stuttering tongue and reserved demeanor. Following the passing of her mother, Cadence decides she wants to become a nurse in order to make up for the damage her brother has done to the family's reputation and to win her father's long-sought acceptance. Cadence finds another method to help after Dorothea Dix rejects her because of her youth and attractive appearance singing to the soldiers in Judiciary Square Hospital. Only one medical professional is resistant to her.

Joshua Ivy is a tough guy with a soft spot in his heart for the hurting and oppressed. An idealistic woman upsetting his meticulously prepared plans is the one thing he cannot have. He must decide if the lives at stake and his own heart are worth the risk of letting Cadence inside as the chaos of war forces Cadence into the thick of his covert actions.

When Joshua and Cadence learn about the operations of a hidden group that is so evil, their lives and the war's outcome may never be the same. Will the One who sees all lead them in the deepest night if they face an enemy they cannot see?

My review

This is truly wonderful and exceptional. I would say that this is another Civil War narrative that is fairly memorable, and I could hear Cadence's singing as I read it.

A smile that also gives you courage. I was mistaken in thinking that the romance would take center stage. It successfully strikes a mix between romance, military scenes, medical advancements, and a Christian message.

The characters, plot, tempo, narrative, and environment are all quite interesting. My only complaint is that the tale can, at times, seem superfluous and tedious in the middle, but it's a minor one.

Last but not least, the book continues to inspire readers by reminding them that despite our circumstances, there is always a glimmer of hope that one day the darkness will lift.
