The Summary

In a moving tale about family and second chances by the renowned author of The Singing Trees, a widower father and his little daughter set off on a journey that will change their lives.

Baxter Shaw and Mia, their eight-year-old daughter, have both had a difficult time adjusting to their wife's passing. Baxter has quit his band and put his goals on hold in order to focus on being a single father, but it isn't enough because Mia is displaying worsening behavioral issues. And until the past reaches out to them, neither has been able to face it head on.

Baxter and Mia travel to southeast Spain to connect with their enigmatic roots after unexpected DNA test findings. A woman whose courage and passion for the land remind Baxter of the love he lost and that it's not too late to rekindle his own aspirations is among the family they never realized they had while staying in a centuries-old home on a renowned olive oil estate.

For Baxter and Mia, the healing season in Spain awakens a fresh perspective on life thanks to the charm of the country. But as long buried family secrets come to light and the future of the estate is in doubt, Baxter will have to make the decision to let go of the past if he ever wants to find love and live once more.

My Review

A touching and empowering tale about a single father caring for his daughter after an accident that lasted three years. It is both truly terrible and simultaneously heartwarming. A diary about getting over loss.

You're going to initially perceive it as being slow-paced, which is entirely acceptable considering the situation that Baxter, the father, is in and the fact that Mia hasn't yet begun to seriously suffer from the loss of her mother.

Every syllable in this incredibly well-written piece captures the unease and frustration that single parents experience, with the majority of them giving up their goals in order to provide their kids the best possible upbringing.

The story, plot, environment, and characters are all very well done, and the pacing is excellent.

The book truly encourages us to look at it through the eyes of both a parent and a youngster. This serves as a reminder that despite the difficult trip we must do, there will always be a new light of life after every dark moment.

One of the books you might include on your reading list.
